For over a century, riding a bicycle has been a purely mechanical matter. With the advent of the eBike, the bicycle market has been completely redefined. It now serves as a precursor for the development of electric mobility and its acceptance by society. The eBike is today the most successful electrically powered vehicle in the European Union. With its innovative technologies, the pioneers in automotive and mobility technologies developers Robert Bosch has made a decisive contribution to that success. The company’s aim is to establish the eBike as a model of success worldwide.  Bosch is therefore devoted to improving the performance capacity of eBikes even further for example, by applying advanced battery technologies, innovative gear shifting concepts and intelligent connectivity. Collaborating closely with manufacturers and dealers, it is developing products that capture the imagination and further the trend toward electric mobility.

eBikes inspire and drive our mobility and are one of the most agile, comfortable and simply clever means of transportation of our time. They positively affect our health, the environment and society. Pedelecs open up a wide variety of possibilities: a tour of discovery during your free time or while on vacation, on the way to work and when taking care of errands the eBike embodies freedom and independence, shrinks mountains, shortens the distances that lie ahead and makes it even easier to reach our goals. The most modern components and high degree of design flexibility offered by the Bosch drive systems form the foundation for bicycle manufacturer’s diverse palette of products whether they be full suspension, mountain, trekking, city or touring bikes.

The Drive Unit: Harmoniously balanced or assertively powerful? Natural is what is important. The Bosch riding sensation creates a unique eBike experience. Three sensors measure pedaling power, cadence, and speed more than 1000 times per second. This enables the rider and the eBike to interact with each other organically.

The arrangement of the gear system provides for optimal integration of the Drive Unit design and for more ground clearance. The Drive Units small size means that it weighs less, features a shorter pedal distance, and is more ergonomic. They also come in two variant in terms of gears: Hub & Derailleur system. The drive unit doesn’t not completely drive your bike, it only assists your peddling with just the right level of support with every push of the pedal for relaxed bike tours and optimal power balance ideal for leisure eBike enthusiasts. The movement your stop peddling, the drive unit too stops letting your cycle move under inertia.

The PowerPacks: All lithium-ion batteries, PowerPacks from Bosch eBike Systems are available in three energy content levels: 300 Wh, 400 Wh and 500 Wh. Each is in turn available as a rack or frame battery. They can be easily inserted and removed, or they can be recharged directly on the eBike. The Battery Management System (BMS) provides the best possible protection against overcharging, undervoltage and short circuiting, while further enhancing the service life of PowerPacks.

These are highly reliable rechargeable batteries that provide durable energy storage without memory effect or self-discharge. The Battery Management System (BMS) protects them against overload, undervoltage, and overheating. High-quality Single-Cell Monitoring (SCM) measures the voltage of each individual cell. PowerPack 300 and PowerPack 400 are lithium-ion batteries with 300 Wh and 400 Wh, respectively. Each is in turn available as a rack or frame battery. The latter is positioned very close to the center of gravity, which enhances maneuverability. In the case of step-through (low-entry) bike frames, the battery is mounted on the rack. Regardless of where they are mounted, it’s very easy to remove the batteries and recharge them at the nearest outlet.

These bikes come with electronic ebike commanding center of various kinds. The simplest of them “Intuvia” lets the biker know his speed, battery life and distance left. It offers the biker five dynamic drive modes: Eco(optimum speed & power),

Tour( long distance leisure ride), Sport ( sporty drives in city), Turbo (extreme powerful off road rides) and Off ( no assistance yet all on board functions can be accessed).  It also has Walk assistance which makes pushing your eBike easier. The maximum speed of this function (Cruise) is 6 kph. The new service interval display notifies you ahead of time whenever your eBike is due for servicing. The unit also recommends you to shift the gear up or down depending on the surface and your peddling speed.

The more advanced version of this electronic unit is called the Nyon. It comes with a touch screen interface where you can alter the way your screen looks. It has navigation systems and also a fitness tracker. You could connect your Android or iOS devices through Bluetooth to receive call and text messages. Adding a little upgradation to your Nyon will let you a new feature called integrative electronic gear shifting which offers more riding comfort and safety, and due to continuously optimal gear ratios, even better range.

eBiking is proving very popular. For young or old, for urban or sporty use, the eBike’s electric power boost makes cycling more relaxing, you travel longer distances and you reach your destination feeling fresher. What began as a niche movement has become a trend. There are 2.5 million pedelecs on German roads. Opting for an eBike is well worthwhile. The market is constantly coming up with new models and versions. Pedelecs capable of speeds of up to either 25 km/h or 45 km/h. eBikes are available for urban or cross-country use, for leisure tours or for summiteers with sporting ambitions. The pedelec is often the fastest mode of transport available in urban traffic over distances of up to and including 5 km – and over distances of up to 10 km eBikers can easily keep up with car drivers. eBikes are much less expensive than cars to buy and to maintain. Fuel costs, insurance premiums, car tax or parking charges? Zero.

The cost of fuel alone for a diesel-powered car is currently around EUR 7.00 per 100 km. 100 km on a pedelec costs around EUR 0.25. Now that is a genuine saving. These bikes are light on the environment and they keep you fit despite the power assistance eBikers still have to hit the pedals to get moving. And it is up to you to decide how much power assistance you want or need. Studies have found that eBikers get on their bikes two to three times more often and cover much longer distances than conventional cyclists. Moreover it is like an invisible “hand” to give you a gentle push and make starting on an uphill stretch or cycling on a steep ascent almost effortless. Making mountains no longer daunting and headwinds neither here nor there. The eBike makes it possible.
